    This index, still somewhat experimental in nature, contains all Chinese terms found on my pages (i.e., not just the plant names, but also names of foods and regions). In addition, many Japanese terms written in kanji are included.

    The index is organized by Chinese logographs (hanzi) which are collated alphabetically according to their Pinyin value. Note that Pinyin refers to Mandarin only, even if the word in question is Cantonese or Japanese. For each hanzi, I give Pinyin romanization (both with correct accents and with the surrogate notation popular on the web). In many cases, you will find approximate translations into English for the hanzi. These translations mostly stem from Wiktionary.

    In each hanzi entry, all words containing the character are listed in Chinese script and in Pinyin romanization. These elements link to the page where the name occurs. Some Chinese words apper on several pages, and are then listed multiply in this index. The total number of different hanzi appearing here is 361 in 690 different logographically-written keywords, most of which appeare in multiple places.

    The majority of Cantonese and Japanese terms (the latter only if written in Kanji) has also been included here. Romanization rules applied are Wade-Giles for Cantonese and Hepburn for Japanese.

    For technical reasons I cannot now add logographs that appear only in Cantonese and/or Japanese terms. Such characters are simply missing from the index. Put in another way, each hanzi entry must contain at least one Mandarin term.

    Although Mandarin, Cantonese and Japanese share the same writing system (at least, to some extent), a web browser may determine the language from the HTML markup and choose different fonts that reflect the typographic traditions of the respective languages best. The choice can also be delegated to the font itself if the font format supports language-sensitive glyphs. The following table contains some random selection of Hanzi letters; if you see slightly different glyphs, then your system supports language-based font selection and is correctly configured.

    On the right side, you can see how this table looks like on my browser (Firefox 1.5.0.1, Linux). Clearly, glyphs are chosen according to the language markup. What I don't know, however, is whether the choices are right— I speak no Chinese and don't recognize glyphs as Simplified, Traditional or Japanese. I expect that the Mandarin line should appear Simplified, and the Japanese line of course in Japanese. I am not sure which style would be best for Cantonese.
